Hoy, rasgo mis propias ropas para dar vida a una nueva etapa. La ternura del imaginario de la niñez sirviendo de cama para rostros adultos, excesivos y maquillados Esta obra nace de una arqueología personal. Encontré un grupo de fotos de mi infancia: yo, un niño maquillado de payaso, protegido por una manta y el abrazo de mi madre. Esa manta es el origen visual de lo que ven hoy. Estoy construyendo estos textiles con los residuos de mi propia historia: telas infantiles, mis trajes de show y, lo más íntimo, las toallas con las que limpio mi rostro cada noche. En esos trapos sucios de maquillaje está la verdad de mi performance y la vulnerabilidad de mi piel. A través de la costura, me adentro en una pregunta vital: ¿Cómo siente el amor una Drag Queen? ¿Cómo puedo enamorarme yo? En cada pieza retrato parejas ideales, manifestando un futuro donde el afecto no juzga la vestimenta. Este es mi manifiesto suave: quiero que podamos ser amados sin importar cómo nos veamos. Quiero poder caminar libre y sentir que el amor, en todas sus formas, también es parte nuestra. Aquí estoy atando todos mis hilos: mi infancia, mi carrera drag y vínculos que no se deshilachen. Santiago, Chile. Junio 2026 Ten years ago, Nia de Indias was born, and with her, a decade of coexistence between who I am and who I project myself to be. Today, I tear my own clothes to give life to a new era. The tenderness of childhood imagery serving as a bed for adult, excessive, and made-up faces. This work is born from a personal archaeology. I found a collection of photos from my childhood: myself, a young boy with clown makeup, protected by a blanket and my mother’s embrace. That blanket is the visual origin of what you see today. I am constructing these textiles from the residues of my own history: children’s fabrics, my show costumes, and, most intimately, the towels I use to clean my face every night. In those makeup-stained rags lies the truth of my performance and the vulnerability of my skin. Through sewing, I delve into a vital question: How does a Drag Queen feel love? How can I fall in love? In each piece, I portrait ideal couples, manifesting a future where affection does not judge the attire. This is my soft manifesto: I want us to be loved no matter how we look. I want to be able to walk free and feel that love, in all its forms, belongs to us too. Here I am, tying all my threads together: my childhood, my drag career, and bonds that will not unravel. I chose to title the majority of the pieces with masculine names in order to explicitly state the identity of the portrayed characters. He decidido titular esta obra con el nombre de la exposición, pues constituye mi 'Declaración de amor': un gesto que trasciende lo romántico para reivindicar el amor propio, el reconocimiento de la propia diversidad y la felicidad en el proceso de devenir. This textile piece is the largest-scale work I have produced to date. Across six portraits, it chronicles the evolution of a man from birth and adolescence to adulthood; nevertheless, this chronology is disrupted to give way to his transformation and cross-dressing. Era una ciudad que yo no conocía, y que tampoco conocía a Nia. A propósito de la distancia con mi familia, quienes se quedaron viviendo en Santiago, me permití explorar mi alter ego travesti sin el rostro cubierto, como lo estaba haciendo desde 2015 en fiestas y galerías de la ciudad. Encontré en el maquillaje una nueva manera de presentar a Nia al mundo. Es en mi tierra natal donde surge mi investigación con las toallitas desmaquillantes de la serie La piel. Sin la máscara, el cuento ya era distinto. En una salida, junto a María Montoya y Mónica Mosquera, quienes se encargaron del registro audiovisual, fijamos un recorrido a pie desde mi casa temporal en Bogotá hasta el Museo Nacional de Colombia, una de las primeras instituciones museales del continente, con el fin de presentar a Nia De Indias. Lamentablemente, al intentar ingresar, los guardias de seguridad nos abordaron e intentaron impedir la entrada con la excusa de que la manera en que iba vestida no era la adecuada para entrar. Esta situación escaló rápidamente al equipo del museo, que, confusamente, nos preguntaba qué íbamos a hacer dentro del edificio, a lo que nosotros respondimos que, como cualquier otro aficionado al arte, solo íbamos a ver las obras. Esta situación me hizo caer en cuenta de que, al parecer, los museos no eran tan abiertos como quizás ingenuamente algunos pensábamos. During the first half of 2017, after living in Chile for six years, I had the chance to return to Bogotá, Colombia, for a season. It was a city I no longer knew, and one that didn't know Nia either. Because of the distance from my family, who remained in Santiago, I allowed myself to explore my drag alter ego without covering my face—unlike what I had been doing since 2015 in the city's parties and galleries. I found in makeup a new way to present Nia to the world. It was in my homeland where my research with makeup remover wipes for the series La Piel (The Skin) first emerged. Without the mask, the story was already different. On one outing, together with María Montoya and Mónica Mosquera—who were in charge of the audiovisual recording—we set out on foot from my temporary home in Bogotá to the National Museum of Colombia, one of the oldest museums on the continent, with the goal of introducing Nia De Indias. Unfortunately, as we tried to enter, security guards approached us and attempted to block our entry, using the excuse that the way I was dressed was inappropriate. The situation quickly escalated to the museum staff, who confusedly asked what we intended to do inside the building. We replied that, like any other art enthusiast, we were simply there to see the works. This situation made me realize that, apparently, museums were not as open as some of us had perhaps naively thought. Pasaron cinco años antes de retomar esta acción nuevamente. Recibí una invitación por primera vez para exponer una de mis obras en Londres, y no dudé en llevar a Nia conmigo en la maleta. Esta vez, junto a la fotógrafa Antonia Canales, quien me recibió en su casa, nos dirigimos hacia la icónica National Gallery en Trafalgar Square. Era la primera vez que Londres me recibía, y quería enfrentarme nuevamente al mismo escenario. Para nuestra sorpresa, y en medio de las últimas polémicas en que activistas climáticos han vandalizad obras de arte en museos europeos, fuimos bienvenidas sin ningún problema. El registro obtenido ese día da cuenta de la facilidad con que nos permitieron movernos por el espacio. Me sentía una verdadera reina, robando la atención a cada uno de esos maestros del arte, musas y reyes que estaban inmortalizados en sus salones. Five years passed before I took this action up again. I received my first invitation to exhibit one of my works in London, and I didn't hesitate to pack Nia in my suitcase. This time, along with photographer Antonia Canales, who hosted me at her home, we headed toward the iconic National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. It was my first time being welcomed by London, and I wanted to face that same scenario once more. To our surprise—and in the midst of recent controversies where climate activists have vandalized artworks in European museums—we were welcomed without any issues. The documentation captured that day reflects the ease with which we were allowed to move through the space. Finalmente, en el MASP, ubicado sobre la Avenida Paulista, encontré el espacio perfecto para contar alg que me venía dando vueltas en la cabeza hace un tiempo: la diferencia que percibo en las personas de la calle, en sus miradas y su trato, dependiendo de si estoy vestido como Andrés o como Nia. Esto derivó en una acción doble en días distintos, posando en la instalaciones del montaje de la colección permanente del museo, propuesta por Lina Bo Bardi. Por el frente (Nia) y en el reverso (Andrés), una dualidad que siempre ha estado presente en mi vida diaria: Artista y Obra. Esta acción fue acompañada y registrada por mis compañeras de residencia, Tatiana Zambrano, Ely DD y Adriana Tomatis. Three months later, in November 2022, I completed a residency in São Paulo—a city I hadn't visited before—and I took on the task of studying several of the city's museums. Finally, at the MASP, located on Avenida Paulista, I found the perfect space to explore something that had been on my mind for a while: the difference I perceive in people on the street, in their gazes and how they treat me, depending on whether I am dressed as Andrés or as Nia. This resulted in a double action on different days, posing within the permanent collection display designed by Lina Bo Bardi. On the front (Nia) and on the back (Andrés), a duality that has always been present in my daily life: Artist and Work. This action was accompanied and recorded by my fellow residents, Tatiana Zambrano, Ely DD, and Adriana Tomatis. Finalmente, el año pasado concluí esta acción, ya no como turista, sino como “guía” en mi propia ciudad, Santiago. En compañía nuevamente de Antonia, recorrimos el Museo de Bellas Artes, el MAC en ambas de sus sedes, el MAVI, el Museo de la Memoria, el Museo de la Solidaridad y el Museo Precolombino, llevando un banderín de guía con el título de la exposición “Nia va al museo”. Recorriendo los pasillos y las obras de esas instituciones, buscábamos referentes maricas en sus colecciones. Sorpresivamente, y a seis años de la primera acción en Bogotá, el malestar de algunos guardias de seguridad era evidente. Tanto fue así, que en el Museo de la Memoria fuimos amablemente expulsadas, y en la sede de Quinta Normal del MAC nos pidieron que no lleváramos la bandera adentro. Esto me hace pensar: ¿Cómo vamos a entrar al museo y de qué manera podemos cambiar ese rechazo que la travesti genera en la institución? Ya lo dijo Pancho Casas en una de sus publicaciones en Instagram el 30 de noviembre del año pasado: “Ya se viene una gra retrospectiva 2024 de las no domadas Yeguas del Apocalipsis en el Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes de Chile, desde donde nos botaron tantas veces prohibiéndonos la entrada.” Finally, last year I concluded this performance—no longer as a tourist, but as a "guide" in my own city, Santiago. Accompanied once again by Antonia, we visited the Museo de Bellas Artes, both branches of the MAC, the MAVI, the Museum of Memory, the Museum of Solidarity, and the Pre-Columbian Museum, carrying a guide’s pennant titled with the exhibition’s name: “Nia goes to the museum.” As we moved through the halls and the works of these institutions, we searched for queer (maricas) references within their collections. Surprisingly, six years after that first action in Bogotá, the discomfort of some security guards was still evident. It was so palpable that we were "politely" expelled from the Museum of Memory, and at the Quinta Normal branch of the MAC, we were asked not to carry the flag inside. This makes me wonder: How are we going to enter the museum, and in what way can we change the rejection that the travesti body triggers within the institution? Nia de Indias nos invita a transitar por los espacios patrimoniales, mediante el cuerpo insumiso de una guía drag que emplaza la existencia de contrapúblicos como agencias sociales no-normativas. Corporalidades que introducen en la institución prácticas e identidades que representan e intercambian repertorios culturales diferenciados, dinámicos y fluidos. Nia va al museo evidencia con este gesto que la propia noción de públicos es también una ficción. Una homologación de experiencias móviles y nómades, que tensionan el habitar del museo desde sistemas reguladores y operan como campos de acciones y núcleos de conflictividad permanentes. El museo es un espacio en disputa. Un territorio de debate. Nia lo resignifica, lo trasviste y lo subvierte. Instala el cuerpo no domesticado, el enfoque biográfico, la emocionalidad de la vida pública y la emergencia disruptiva de nuevas formas de vivir el propio cuerpo del museo. Nia de Indias invites us to transit through heritage spaces by way of the rebellious body of a drag guide, who summons the existence of counter-publics as non-normative social agencies. These are corporealities that introduce practices and identities into the institution, representing and exchanging cultural repertoires that are differentiated, dynamic, and fluid. With this gesture, Nia va al museo (Nia goes to the museum) makes it evident that the very notion of "the public" is also a fiction. Pensar en la imagen de la Verónica, una de las mujeres que tendió un velo a Cristo, quedando plasmado en éste su rostro durante el vía crucis hacia su muerte, implica habitar los imaginarios sacrosantos desde la identidad Drag. Pensando en cierta idea de metamorfosis, con toques de ironía y alegoría. Este ejercicio e investigación de casi 6 años, se torna un proceso de sublimación que Andrés Parra, y su alter ego Nia De Indias, retoma para darle una mirada autobiográfica que transita entre lo sacro y lo autobiográfico. Este juego de positivo y negativo que se traduce en fotografías, toallas desmaquillantes y un sudario de cuerpo completo, intenta re-tratar la imagen de la Verónica, buscando en ella la respuesta a esta gran pregunta sobre el VERA ICON: la imagen verdadera. Esta búsqueda por experienciar una imagen no producida por la mano humana, dialoga con el procedimiento histórico e imaginarios de la Verónica. El sudario, las toallas desmaquillantes, que parecieran ser residuos de un montaje Drag, y el registro fotográfico de la performance que da cuenta del proceso de sublimar la imagen, conecta ambos mundos: la biografía religiosa del artista y la práctica Drag. Este vínculo que parece tan distante, encuentra un puente para dialogar (aunque sea de manera irónica y con un afán de intervención) en el procedimiento: la producción visual que construye esta muestra no está hecha en base a retoques e intervenciones, son imágenes donde no hay ficción, ni mayor “maquillaje”, como tampoco existen retoques digitales o procesuales. Nia De Indias, el alter ego Drag del artista, nace y muere en este procedimiento. Encuentra su vida en la construcción de su imagen, a la vez que cada toalla desmaquillante se plasma como una muerte fundamental. Entonces a través del imaginario de Verónica, repensado para imprimir desde el maquillaje este vera icon, el artista nos invita a reflexionar sobre los posibles vínculos entre lo sacro y el Drag, a la vez que nos pregunta: ¿Cómo el ritual Drages también un sudario que se plasma, imprime y sublima en una superficie que sella su muerte? Gonzalo Medina, periodista y gestor cultural. To Imprint, Seal, and Sublimate: What surfaces remain imprinted on the cloths, towels, and domestic shrouds that inhabit our most intimate spaces? What do these surfaces, imprinted with our bodies, tell us, and what do they seek to capture? To consider the image of Saint Veronica—one of the women who offered a veil to Christ, capturing his face upon it during the Stations of the Cross toward his death—implies inhabiting sacrosanct imaginaries through a Drag identity. It is to think of a certain idea of metamorphosis, touched by irony and allegory. This exercise and research, spanning nearly six years, becomes a process of sublimation that Andrés Parra and his alter ego, Nia De Indias, take up to provide an autobiographical gaze that shifts between the sacred and the personal. This interplay of positive and negative—translated into photographs, makeup remover wipes, and a full-body shroud—attempts to re-portray (re-tratar) the image of Veronica, seeking within her the answer to the great question of the VERA ICON: the true image. This quest to experience an image "not made by human hands" dialogues with the historical procedures and imagery of Veronica. The shroud and the makeup wipes—which appear to be the residues of a Drag assembly—alongside the photographic record of the performance documenting the sublimation of the image, connect two worlds: the artist's religious biography and Drag practice. This link, which seems so distant, finds a bridge for dialogue (albeit ironically and with an interventionist urge) through the procedure itself. The visual production that builds this exhibition is not based on retouches or interventions; these are images where there is no fiction, no extra "makeup," nor digital or procedural alterations. Nia De Indias, the artist's Drag alter ego, is born and dies within this procedure. She finds life in the construction of her image, just as each makeup wipe is imprinted as a fundamental death. Con una cámara oculta entre sus brazos, nos propusimos junto a mi amiga y artista Josefina Sastre registrar el viaje de “destransformación” que yo hacía como Nia De indias a Andrés Parra, iniciado desde Estación Baquedano (cerca al barrio Bellavista) hasta mi hogar de ese tiempo en La Dehesa. Esta acción deseaba mostrar mi experiencia partiendo en el mundo del Drag en un contexto donde con 20 años y viviendo junto a mi familia en un barrio alejado de la ciudad, mi orientación sexual y expresión de genero era algo que no se hablaba, por ende, al momento de iniciar la creación de mi alter ego Nia De indias, tenia que llegar a casa como si nada hubiese pasado. El video se propone como un viaje por distintas estaciones de la línea 1, sumado a un trayecto en micro que en total tomaba aproximadamente 1 hora, en este, las miradas de incomodidad de los usuarios del metro se hacen evidentes ante la presencia de mi cuerpo. La ropa, la máscara, los tacones y el maquillaje van quedando guardados en bolsas mientras voy vistiéndome de acorde a la “forma correcta” de llegar a casa. El título de la exposición da vida a este personaje ficticio llamado (NEI) que se manifiesta en los colores de la pintura que llevo en la cara y con el cual doy paso a series de obras como “Dandis” y “La Restauración”. edition.Santiago, Chile -Agradezco profundamente a cada una de las personas que participó y me abrió las puertas de su hogar para ser parte de este proyecto-Somos de acá, es una serie de 40 fotografías polaroid realizadas en el año 2021 por el artista Andrés Parra, más conocido como Nia De indias. El objetivo principal fue celebrar los 10 años de la migración del artista desde Chile a Colombia, reuniendo a un grupo de familias colombianas, visitando sus hogares y entrevistándolas para resaltar sus historias personales como inmigrantes, sin importar su clase social, identidad de género, edad, orientación sexual o cómo llegaron, ya sea buscando nuevas oportunidades de vida o trabajando para una empresa extranjera. Andrés, emigró desde Colombia con sus padres, y es importante mostrar su diáspora como un aporte positivo a la sociedad chilena. Finalmente, todas las fotos van acompañadas de la historia impresa en una página del pasaporte colombiano de cada familia, lo que facilita al espectador la comprensión y la empatía con cada uno de ellos. -I deeply appreciate each of the people who participated and opened the doors of their homes to me to be part of this project- Somos de acá or Whe are from here is a series of 40 polaroid pictures made in the year 2021 by the artist Andrés Parra, better know as Nia De indias. The main goal was to celebrate the 10 anniversary of the artist migration from Chile to Colombia, gattering a group of colombian families, visiting their homes and interviewing them to highlight their personal stories as immigrants, no matter their social class, gender identity, age, sexual orientation or how they arrived, whether it was looking for new life oportunities or working for a foreign company. Andrés, Migrate from Colombia with his parents, and its important to show his diaspora as a positively contribute to Chilean society.
